Illinois Cosmetology Continuing Education

Illinois Cosmetologists are required to complete 14 hours of continuing education before your license renewal on September 30th of each odd-numbered year. A maximum of 50% (7 hours) of the total CE hours may be obtained through home study or online courses. The other 7 hours must be in the classroom.

Currently, the state of Illinois requires cosmetologists and other professionals to complete 14 hours of continuing education every two years. However, you may be able to meet this requirement through a variety of classes.

To become an Illinois licensed esthetician, students must complete a skincare course lasting at least 18 weeks and containing 750 hours of study. Students can take a maximum of four years to complete their esthetician training. Unlike some other states, Illinois does not allow apprenticeship to qualify for licensing. Skincare specialists in this state also take 10 hours of continuing education during each 2-year licensure period to keep current in the industry and be able to renew their licenses. Esthetician training teaches students to perform various facial treatments, skin analysis, chemical peels, spa treatments for hair removal or waxing, spray tanning, makeup application including spray-on cosmetics, and microdermabrasion therapy. Students take courses in ethics, salon practices, hygiene, and safety. After training is completed, students take written and practical exams. They may then receive their esthetician license from the Illinois State Board of Cosmetology.

A licensing fee is required every 2 years to keep the license valid in the state of Illinois.

 

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates esthetics will grow as a profession by 4 percent nationwide by 2026. Skincare experts in Illinois earn a statewide average annual salary of $29,800 before tips. The Chicago metropolitan area has the third-highest employment level for estheticians among all cities in the US. Keys to increasing income as a skincare specialist include building a stable client base and providing excellent customer service. Estheticians can obtain additional training in specialty services, which will also improve their employment and salary outlook.
 
Working as an Esthetician

They may find work in spas, salons, hotels, department stores, or in other settings where skincare and beauty are highly desired. They may also provide spray-tanning services at a tanning salon, or eventually operate their own salon. Licensed estheticians in Illinois work in salon and spa settings, in hotels, and at resorts where guests seek relaxation and beauty care. They may also work in the cosmetics and skincare departments of retail stores, or they may become product representatives for manufacturers of skincare products. Licensed estheticians in spas also provide anti-aging treatments, waxing, and body wraps. 졸업생 28명 배출, 내년 I-20 발급 등 준비 완료

글렌뷰 소재 IM뷰티스쿨(원장 이사벨라 리)이 14일 개교 2주년 행사 및 졸업식을 거행했다.

2년전 문을 연 IM뷰티스쿨은 한인들을 비롯 타인종 전문 미용인들에게 라이센스 취득 기회를 제공해 왔다.

올해 졸업식에서는 Cosmetology 코스 20명, Teacher 코스 5명, Nail Technology Course 2명, Esthetics 1명 등 총 28명이 졸업의 영예를 안았다.

이사벨라 리 원장은 “코로나 펜데믹 상황이 아니면 더 화려하고 멋진 졸업식을 했을 텐데 규모가 축소되고 간소하게 졸업식을 진행했다”고 전하면서 “조금 더 많은 가족들이나 친구들이 함께 축하하고 졸업식을 멋지게 못한 것 같아 아쉽기도 하다. 그러나 졸업생이  2배로 늘어났고 학교 차원에서는 펜데믹 상황에서도 뜻깊은 학기를 보냈다고 자부한다“고 2회 졸업식 소감을 전했다.

이사벨라 리 원장은 뷰티스쿨의 수업과정에 대한 설명도 덧붙였다. 그는 “학교 메인 과정은 토탈 라이센스 과정이 있고 에스테틱 과정,  네일 테크니션 과정, 티쳐코스 과정이 있으며 주정부에서 발급하는 라이센스를 발급받게 된다”면서 “이미 라이센스를 습득한 분들을 위한 어드밴스 코스 단기과정으로는  마이크로 블레이딩(반영구 화장)과정,  스킨과정, 헤어과정도 준비돼 있다”고 전했다.

IM뷰티스쿨의 강점에 대한 소개도 잊지 않고 전했다.  이사벨라 리 원장은 “학교에서 교재와 수업 등에 있어 철저함이 가장 큰 강점이다. 교육에 임하는 강사들이 전문적이며 영어, 스페인어 등의 다양한 언어로 교육이 가능하도록 각 언어별 강사를 풍부하게 확보하여 보다 다양하고 집중력 있는 강의를 제공하고 있다. 학생들의 만족도를 높이기 위해 최선을 다하고 있다“면서 “학교 시설 역시 최고를 자부한다. 일반적으로 운영되는 전문 샵에 못지않은 전문적인 기구들과 실습재료를 확보하여 실제 취업 현장에서도 바로 적용할 수 있도록 하고 있다. 학생들이 사용하는 스튜던트 키트 역시 프로페셔널용으로 제작해 졸업 후 현장에서 바로 적용할 수 있도록 하고 있다”고 힘주어 말했다.

코로나 펜데믹 사태로 인한 해프닝도 올해 졸업식의 빼놓을 수 없는 이야기 거리 중 하나였다. 이사벨라 리 원장은 “코로나로 인해 어쩔 수 없이 진행한 온라인 수업이 오히려 더 좋은 효과를 가져왔다. 조지아와 미시간 등  타주에 있는 학생들이 참가해 자격증을 취득할 수 있는 기회도 있었고 타인종들의 참여도 색다른 모습이었다”고 전하면서 “코로나 때문은 아니겠으나 예년에 비해 타인종들의 비율이 늘어났다. 작년의 경우 10%가 타인종이었던 데 반해 올해는 60%가 타인종 학생들이어서 우리 학교의 수준이 글로벌화 되고 더 높아진 것이라고 자부한다”고 말했다.

이사벨라 리 원장은 “시카고 한인사회에서 미용학교를 운영하며 미용과 더불어 미용인들을 배출해 오면서 사람의 아름다움을 더욱 부각 시켜주는 전문인들을 배출해 오며 자부심을 가진다. 관심있는 분들이 적극적으로 문의해주셨으면 좋겠다. 뷰티 분야는 모든 분야에 폭 넓게 비지니스에 접목할 수 있다. 지역 사회에 도움이나 일조를 하기 위한 부분을 찾기 위해 노력하겠다”고 마지막 소감을 전했다.

이날 졸업생 니나 채파로씨는 “아시는 분들이 미용실을 하고 있고 한국에서 미용학교를 다닌 경험이 있다. 미국에 와서 오랫동안 다른 일을 하다가 다시 무었인가 하고 싶은 마음에 학교의 문을 두드리게 됐다”면서 “헤어쪽으로 집중해서 공부했고 8월 18일에 시험에도 합격했다.  현재 미용실에서 일하고 있는데 앞으로 훌륭한 헤어 디자이너가 되고 싶다. IM 뷰티스쿨에서 내 인생이 업그레이드 된 것 같다. 학교는 물론 잘 챙겨주신 원장님께도 너무나 감사하다”고 말했다.

한편 IM 뷰티스쿨은 지난해 1회 졸업식을 치른 후 I-20 발급 및 FAFSA  승인을 위해 노력해온 가운데 최근 이민국을 통해 I-20 관련심사를 진행중이며 FAFSA 측에서는 8월 14일 최종 서류가 처리되고 최종 업데이트만 남아 있는 것으로 알려져 내년 봄께 본격적인 진행이 될 것으로 보인다고 덧붙였다.

‘스트레스 없는 평생직업’ 미용인 육성 자부심

IM뷰티스쿨 이사벨라 리 원장 “미용 최고 강사·시설 갖춰”

지난 9월 초 문을 연 IM뷰티스쿨(원장 이사벨라 리)은 “한인 미용인들에게 라이센스를 갖는 길을 열어주기 위해” 설립됐다. 전문직에 종사하려는 많은 한인들을 위해 정식면허 발급을 통한 전문인 육성을 목표로 하고 있다.

이사벨라 리 원장은 2000년 도미 이전에도 한국에서 미용살롱 운영, 전문강사 등 미용인으로서의 삶을 살아왔다. ‘전문 미용인 40년째’인 이 원장은 “아름답게 만들어 주는 게 어떤 것인지 알고, 연구하는 사람”이라고 본인을 소개했다.

IM뷰티스쿨 교육시스템은 주정부 인증을 거쳤다. 매뉴얼대로 오전에는 이론수업, 오후에는 실기로 수업이 이뤄진다. 설비 역시 최고·최상의 제품들로 갖췄으며, 손기술이 좋은 한국인의 테크닉을 접목해 수업을 함으로써 수강생들, 특히 외국인들 반응이 좋다고 이 원장은 전했다.

수업은 네일, 헤어, 메이크업, 페이셜 등을 포함하는 ’토탈 미용’ 중심으로 이뤄진다. 전체 수업 시간은 1500시간. 주 정부 필수사항이다. 350시간만 이수하면 되는 네일 테크니션 경우 젊은 친구들 관심이 많은 편이다. 이 원장은 그러나 “향후 자기 비즈니스를 꿈꾼다면 토탈 라이센스를 권하고 싶다”고 말했다.

이 곳을 수료하면 100% 취업 알선을 보장한다는 게 이 원장의 장담이다. 그에 따르면, 미용인이 많이 부족한데다 라이센스를 갖고 있는 미용인이 많지 않은 것이 현실이다. IM뷰티스쿨 자체 살롱, 네일숍 등 많은 업체들과 협업을 진행하고 있다는 점도 취업이 순조로운 이유다. 다수 외국업체와도 협력하고 있다.

트리코치(Tricoci University of Beauty Culture) 등 주류 미용학교와 견줘 “디테일에 강하다”는 것도 이 원장이 내세우는 차별점이다. 그 곳을 졸업하고 IM뷰티스쿨 고급반에 들어오는 학생들이 특히 좋아하는 점이란다. 한인들에게 배워 한인 헤어를 다룰 줄 알면 외국인들 헤어는 “식은 죽 먹기”라는 이 원장은 “동양사람들은 화려한 헤어를 선호하고 못하는 칼라가 없어 힘들어도 배워두면 주류사회 어느 곳에서도 경쟁력을 가질 수 있다”고 말했다.

고등학교만 졸업하면 누구나 IM뷰티스쿨 강의를 들을 수 있다. 나이나 성별에 제한 없이 누구나 다 뷰티스쿨에 등록 할 수 있다고 이원장은 덧붙였다.

내년에는 인근 고등학교와 연계해 방과후 프로그램 운영 계획도 갖고 있다. 여름학교 식으로 몇 주간 운영하는 식으로, 미용에 관심 있는 학생들에의 진로에 도움을 주기 위한 취지이다. 이르면 내년부터 시행할 것을 목표로 준비중이다.

미국에 오고 싶어하는 한국 미용인들에게 도움을 주는 방안도 모색 중이다. 학생비자(I-20) 발급도 검토 중이며, 그 전이라도 한국 라이센스의 미국 내 변경 등을 지원할 계획이다. 타주 라이센스를 가진 미용인들의 시카고 면허 변경 등도 지원 대상이다.

IM뷰티스쿨은 수시 관련 세미나도 갖는다. 오픈 두 달만에 벌써 다양한 브랜드에서 많은 분들이 다녀갔다. 이 원장은 “40년 한 나도 여전히 부족함을 느낀다”며 “급변하는 트랜드를 따라잡기 위해서라도 세미나나 박람회 참가, 또는 인터넷 자가학습 등은 매우 중요하다”고 강조했다.

“IM뷰티스쿨 설립 자체가 흥분되는 일이었어요. 한인이 시카고에서 처음 자체 힘으로 미용학교를 만들었다는 것이 감사하고 벅찼습니다. 오랜 비즈니스 경험상 몇년 내 자리잡는 건 쉽지 않을 것이라 생각했는데, 생각보다 많은 분들이 문의하고 찾아주고 계셔 희망적입니다.”

유능한 강사진 확보는 남은 과제. 더 나아가 이 원장 큰 꿈은 “5년 내 샌디에고에 IM뷰티스쿨 분교를 내는” 데 있다. 이를 기반으로 미주 전역 3~4군데 분교를 운영하고 싶다는 바람을 전했다. 특히 2세들을 대상으로 “안정적이고, 무엇보다 스트레스가 없는 평생직업”으로서 미용을 가르치고 싶다고 이 원장은 말했다.

매주 토요일 이 곳은 학생 가족이나 지인 등 모두에게 오픈된다. 실제 이 곳에서 헤어 등 서비스를 받을 수도 있다. ‘학교와 살롱이 같이 가는 것’은 대세이며, 학생들이 실전을 익힐 수 있어 주 정부에서도 권장하고 있다는 게 이 원장의 설명.

현재 오픈 프로모션을 진행하고 있다. 11월말까지 등록할 경우 수업료 반값 할인혜택이 주어진다.
